Holly Springs car accident statistics
NCDOT's 2025 city ranking counts 3,163 reported crashes in Holly Springs from 2023 through 2025, with 4 fatal crashes and 446 non-fatal injury crashes. Official sources name Toll NC 540 and Holly Springs Road without ranking roads by crashes.
NCDOT's 2025 city ranking records 3,163 reported crashes in Holly Springs across the three years from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025. Of those, 4 were fatal crashes and 446 were non-fatal injury crashes.
As for where, the official sources for Holly Springs single out roads for traffic volume and construction rather than crash rank. This page names them on those same terms.
How many crashes are in NCDOT's Holly Springs figures?
NCDOT ranks North Carolina cities with 10,000 or more people each year, and each edition reaches back three years. The Holly Springs rows from the two newest editions read as follows.
| NCDOT edition | Period | Total crashes | Alcohol-related share | Fatal crashes | Non-fatal injury crashes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 ranking | January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025 | 3,163 | 2.24% | 4 | 446 |
| 2024 ranking | January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024 | 3,026 | 2.35% | 4 | 423 |
Neighboring editions overlap by two years. Each row is its own total and the rows do not add up to a yearly series.
Wake County Government lists Holly Springs among the twelve municipalities in the county. The county's own crash totals, which run on a different basis, are on the Wake County page.
NCDOT bases the ranking on several factors, among them reported crashes, crash severity and crash rates based on population. Alcohol-related crashes appear as a share of the total and not as a count.
The criteria document lists ten measures, running from total crashes and crash rates per 1,000 people to equivalent property damage, a severity index and average annual crash cost per person. It does not state how the measures are weighted.
The statewide book, NCDMV's North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts, is online for 2024. NCDMV's Crash Facts page offers the 2025 report by email request to operations-support@ncdot.gov.
What counts as a crash in these totals?
The legal yardstick is G.S. 20-4.01(33b). It defines a reportable crash as one involving a motor vehicle that results in death or injury of a human being, or total property damage of $1,000 or more.
The ranking documents say they rest on all reported crashes and give no narrower definition. NCDOT describes a different product, the statewide crash data table behind its dashboard, as limited to public roads, with crashes in parking lots and private vehicular areas excluded. That public road limit is a choice in NCDOT's counting for the dashboard data and is not written into the reportable crash definition.
Which Holly Springs roads do official sources single out?
Toll NC 540 is the newest. NCDOT's project page says the Complete 540 Phase 1 extension opened to traffic on September 25, 2024. NCDOT's opening announcement describes it as running from the N.C. 55 Bypass in Apex to the I-40 and I-42 interchange in Garner, with a diverging diamond interchange at Holly Springs Road, exit 50. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority opened it. NCDOT's project page describes a second phase that adds another 10 miles from I-40 to the I-540, I-87, U.S. 64 and U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, with the whole project scheduled for completion in 2028.
The town describes Holly Springs Road as "one of the most heavily traveled thoroughfares in Town," and its west widening runs from the N.C. 55 Bypass to Main Street. The town is also designing a four-lane, median-divided Avent Ferry Road between Ralph Stephens and Cass Holt roads, and it is building a southbound right turn lane on N.C. 55 between Avent Ferry Road and Main Street. The town expects Avent Ferry construction to begin in 2029 and the turn lane to be finished in 2026.
None of those pages ranks a road by its crash record. Traffic volume and construction put these roads in the official record, and that is all this page says about them.
How can you check a specific Holly Springs location?
NCDOT publishes online safety data maps. They include a total crash frequency map by intersection and a statewide crash dashboard covering the latest five years, and NCDOT says the maps are updated annually unless otherwise noted. NCDOT describes the intersection map as planning level crash data that cannot be used for detailed analysis. The fatal and serious injury crash map covers the past ten years, and its pedestrian and bicycle crash map goes back to 2007.
A map shows where crashes gather. It does not show who was at fault in yours, and fault is the question the contributory negligence page takes up. You are doing a service to the client by being realistic about their case. The Holly Springs crash injury page covers the town's police and hospital, and the Holly Springs crash report page explains the NCDMV request.
Questions
Common questions
Are NCDOT's Holly Springs numbers for one year?
No. NCDOT's 2025 ranking covers all reported crashes from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025, and the 2024 ranking covers January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024.
How many fatal crashes does NCDOT show for Holly Springs?
Four fatal crashes in the 2025 ranking's window of January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025. The 2024 ranking also shows four for its window.
Does an official source rank the most dangerous road in Holly Springs?
The NCDOT ranking ranks towns, not roads. The town's project pages describe Holly Springs Road by traffic volume and describe the other roads by construction, not by crash rank.
