Representation after a crash in Cary

From his only office, in Graham, Julian Doby represents people hurt in Cary crashes. A Cary client's first conversation with him is by phone or video, and the firm keeps no office in Cary or elsewhere in Wake County.

When someone is hurt in a Cary crash, I represent that person from my office in Graham, and we start with a phone or video conversation. I keep no office in Cary and none elsewhere in Wake County.

Most of Cary is in Wake County and a small part of it is in Chatham County. The sections below cover that county line along with the police agency, the state roads, the hospital and the 2024 crash count that come up after a Cary crash.

Which agency investigates a crash on a Cary street?

Inside the town limits the agency is the Cary Police Department, which is at 120 Wilkinson Avenue. G.S. 20-166.1 names a town's own police department as the agency a driver must notify after a crash in that town.

Past the town line the same statute names the State Highway Patrol or the sheriff of whichever county the crash happened in. Along most of Cary's edge that county is Wake. On the western side it can be Chatham.

The town's list of NCDOT projects in Cary includes work on I-40 and US 1. Under the statute's notice rule, the road name does not pick the agency on those highways. The spot where the crash happened decides it, measured against the town line.

Toll NC 540 has a patrol arrangement of its own. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority, whose operators manage traffic on the Triangle Expressway, describes Toll NC 540 as starting at NC 54 on the west side of Cary. Its Toll Safety Patrol puts two dedicated State Highway Patrol officers and one Incident Management Assistance Patrol responder on the road during weekday working hours.

The Cary crash report guide explains how to request the report after it is written. For a reportable crash, Cary sends that request to NCDMV.

What changes on the Chatham County side of Cary?

A Town of Cary planning document says a small portion of the town extends west into Chatham County. The state budget office's July 2025 estimate puts 4,542 of Cary's 190,336 residents in the Chatham County portion and the rest in Wake County.

Chatham County's planning office says the same thing from its side. Its FAQ on the joint land use plan with Cary names portions of Amberly and Weldon Ridge as properties inside both Chatham County and the Cary municipal limits.

Inside the town limits the county line leaves the agency alone. A crash on a Cary street in Chatham County still goes to the Cary Police Department under the statute's town rule. Outside the limits the line changes the sheriff, because the statute names the sheriff of the county where the crash happened.

The line also shows up on the paperwork. NCDMV's request form asks for the county of the crash, and a crash on the Chatham side of Cary goes on that form as a Chatham County crash.

What highway work does the town list for Cary?

The Town of Cary keeps a page titled NCDOT Projects in Cary. These are the entries on it that touch the major highways.

  • The Crossroads Junction interchange. NCDOT plans to redesign the interchange where I-40, I-440, US 1 and US 64 meet in order to relieve congestion. The town lists design-build starting in 2027.
  • I-40 at Airport Boulevard. The town reports this interchange is under construction as a Diverging Diamond Interchange, with an auxiliary lane on I-40 from Airport Boulevard west to I-540.
  • US 64 from US 1 to Laura Duncan Road. On the town's schedule, right of way acquisition for this upgrade begins in 2027 and construction follows in 2030.
  • Aviation Parkway between I-40 and NC 54. NCDOT proposes a four-lane median-divided road here, and the town lists right of way acquisition starting in 2026.
  • Toll NC 540. The town lists the Complete 540 extension that begins at the NC 55 Bypass in Apex and heads to Knightdale. Phase 1 is complete, and the town expects Phase 2 to finish in 2028.

Which Cary hospital takes emergency patients?

WakeMed Cary Hospital runs what WakeMed calls a full-service, 24-hour emergency department. WakeMed describes the hospital as the only full-service hospital in Cary.

WakeMed also says the Cary emergency department is backed by WakeMed Children's and by what it calls Wake County's only Level I Trauma Center.

The emergency visit opens the medical record, and the visits after it continue that record. Delays and gaps in medical treatment severely damage the value of a case.

What was Cary's 2024 crash total?

NCDMV's 2024 North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts report puts Cary at 2,792 crashes for the year in its city table, and that row also records 5 deaths and 998 people injured. NCDMV's Crash Facts page offers the 2025 report only by email request, so the 2024 book is the newest one posted.

The alcohol and pedestrian figures from that row appear on the Cary crash statistics page, next to the segment count the Turnpike Authority publishes for Toll NC 540 in western Cary.

What does working with a Graham attorney look like from Cary?

Cary clients and I begin by phone or video, and I meet with clients in person as well.

The office address is 110 W. Elm Street, Graham. My North Carolina law license dates from 1998.

Much of the early work happens on paper. We collect every insurance policy that could cover the crash, because carriers do not volunteer their coverage. I then read those policies against the current statutes to see which ones stack.

I am realistic with clients about what the evidence shows, and I do not put a number on a case. The client hears my opinion and makes the decision.

The truck crash page covers claims against trucking companies, and the Wake County page covers the courthouse for a case filed in Wake. Calls to 336-221-8900 reach the office Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and email goes to julian@juliandobylaw.com.
