Apex crash injury claims with Julian Doby
Julian Doby takes Apex crash injury cases from his one office, in Graham. He has no office in Apex or Wake County, and an Apex client's first conversation with him takes place by phone or video.
People injured in Apex crashes are among the clients I represent from my office in Graham. We talk first by phone or video. The firm has no Apex location and no location anywhere in Wake County.
Apex is where the 2024 extension of Toll NC 540 begins, and US 1 and US 64 both cross the town. The sections below start with the town's crash count and then turn to the roads and the police department before the emergency departments and how I work with Apex clients.
What does the state's 2024 crash book say about Apex?
Apex appears in NCDMV's 2024 North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts with 1,220 crashes. One person died in those crashes and 466 people were injured, according to the city crash data table.
No 2025 edition of the report is posted yet. NCDMV says the 2025 report is available by email request.
That row's subcategory columns are on the Apex crash statistics page, together with the Turnpike Authority's count for the toll road segment that ends at the NC 55 Bypass.
Which highways cross Apex?
The Town of Apex keeps a page of NCDOT projects in and around town, last updated January 6, 2026. It lists these state routes.
- NC 55, also called Williams Street. NCDOT plans to widen NC 55 from US 1 to Olive Chapel Road into a multilane curb-and-gutter road, and the town lists construction of the first piece for 2029 to 2031. Where NC 55 meets Technology Drive and East Williams Street, NCDOT plans a Reduced Conflict Intersection with a contract award planned for October 2026.
- US 64. The town lists an upgrade from Laura Duncan Road in Apex to US 1 in Cary that converts the Lake Pine Drive and Laura Duncan Road intersections into interchanges. NCDOT's own project page says planning and development are underway and that no date has been set for the next public meeting.
- US 1. The town lists a rebuilt interchange at Ten Ten Road and interchange work at New Hill Holleman Road. A US 1 widening between NC 55 and US 64 appears on the same page as unfunded for construction in the current ten-year state program.
- Toll NC 540. NCDOT says the Triangle Expressway extension that opened in September 2024 stretches from the NC 55 Bypass in Apex to the I-40 and I-42 interchange in Garner. The Town of Apex names NCDOT and the North Carolina Turnpike Authority as the lead agencies, and Turnpike Authority operators manage traffic on the road.
The town's page schedules the NC 55 and US 64 work into the 2030s.
Who investigates an Apex crash?
Within the Apex town limits, the agency is the Apex Police Department. That follows from G.S. 20-166.1, which names a town's police department as the agency a driver must notify after a crash in that town. The department is at 205 Saunders Street.
Once a crash is past the town limits, the statute names the State Highway Patrol or the sheriff of that county. On the Triangle Expressway the Turnpike Authority reports that two Highway Patrol officers and one Incident Management Assistance Patrol responder cover the road during weekday working hours.
The Turnpike Authority runs a Traffic Management Center at the North Carolina National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh around the clock, and its operators coordinate incident response on the toll road. The town has its own piece of emergency response as well. In August 2025 Apex finished a project that lets its fire trucks turn signals green on approach to an emergency, including signals on NC 55 and at US 1.
Apex also reaches into Chatham County. The state budget office's July 2025 estimate lists Apex in both counties, with 49 of its 77,453 residents on the Chatham side. That changes nothing inside the town limits. Just outside them on that edge, the sheriff the statute names is the Chatham County sheriff.
The Apex crash report guide walks through the department's records request and the NCDMV route for a trooper's report.
Where does an Apex crash patient get emergency care?
For emergency care inside Apex, WakeMed lists a 24/7 full-service emergency department at its Apex Healthplex, open to adults and children. WakeMed Cary Hospital in neighboring Cary runs a 24-hour emergency department of its own.
The emergency visit is the first medical record in a claim. You cannot have delays and gaps in medical treatment after it.
What changes for an Apex client when the office is in Graham?
Every Apex client starts with a phone or video conversation, and in-person meetings with clients are part of my practice too.
Julian Doby Law has one office, at 110 W. Elm Street in Graham. My practice in North Carolina goes back to 1998.
Insurance companies rarely announce every policy that covers a crash. Finding those policies is one of the most important jobs on a case, and the rules on stacking them change as the legislature acts.
The adjuster for the other driver works for the insurance company, and the job is to close the claim for as little as possible. We document each client's injuries and treatment in detail, and I am prepared to go to court for a client.
The car crash page covers that work in more detail, and the Wake County page covers the county courthouse. The office takes calls at 336-221-8900 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Email reaches me at julian@juliandobylaw.com.
Questions

Is the firm based in Apex?
It is not. Julian Doby Law has one office, in Graham, and an Apex client's first conversation is by phone or video.
Who handles a crash on Toll NC 540 near Apex?
The location of the crash decides it. G.S. 20-166.1 names the town police as the agency to notify for a crash inside a town, and the Highway Patrol or the county sheriff for a crash outside a town, and the Turnpike Authority assigns dedicated Highway Patrol officers to the Triangle Expressway.
Is any part of Apex in Chatham County?
Yes. The state budget office's July 2025 estimate lists Apex in Wake and Chatham counties, with 49 residents in the Chatham portion.
Does Apex have its own emergency department?
It does, at WakeMed's Apex Healthplex. WakeMed lists a 24/7 full-service emergency department there for adults and children.
