Apex car accident statistics
Apex recorded 1,220 crashes in 2024 according to the North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts city table, with 1 person killed and 466 injured. The Turnpike Authority publishes a Toll NC 540 segment count near Apex, and the official sources cited here do not rank Apex roads.
Apex had 1,220 reportable crashes in 2024 by NCDMV's count, with 1 death and 466 people injured. The figures come from the city crash data table in the 2024 North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts report, where the Apex row sits on page 26.
The rest of this page sets out NCDMV's full row for Apex and then what official sources say about specific Apex roads.
What is in the Apex row of NCDMV's 2024 table?
| Apex, 2024 | All crashes | Alcohol | Pedestrian | Bicycle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crashes | 1,220 | 22 | 13 | 3 |
| Fatalities | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Injuries | 466 | 20 | 14 | 3 |
None of the subcategory columns records a death. The single death in the Apex row came in a crash outside those categories.
Alcohol crashes numbered 22 and injured 20 people. Bicycle crashes numbered 3, with 3 people injured. The pedestrian column shows 14 people injured in 13 crashes. An injury count runs higher than a crash count when one crash hurts more than one person.
NCDMV's city table covers a single year, and it has no 2023 row to compare against. The 2025 edition has not been posted, and NCDMV offers it by email request.
How does NCDOT define a crash for these counts?
NCDOT's counts rest on the reportable crash defined in G.S. 20-4.01(33b), which covers a crash with death or injury, or $1,000 or more in property damage.
NCDOT's 2025 ranking of cities with 10,000 or more people uses a three-year window instead. For Apex it lists 5,010 crashes from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025, including 6 fatal crashes and 880 non-fatal injury crashes.
A three-year total cannot be compared with the one-year table. The ranking also counts fatal crashes where NCDMV's table counts deaths. It puts the alcohol-related share of Apex crashes at 2.14 percent over the three years.
What do official sources say about Apex roads?
The Turnpike Authority publishes a road-segment crash count for Toll NC 540 near Apex. The Turnpike Authority's second-quarter 2026 report lists 116 crashes from June 1, 2023 through May 31, 2026 on the 5.9-mile segment from US 64 to the NC 55 Bypass. The same table lists 156 crashes on the 17.1-mile segment from the NC 55 Bypass east to I-40. Across the whole Triangle Expressway it counts 480 crashes in that window. NCDOT places the NC 55 Bypass in Apex, where the 2024 extension begins.
The Authority reported a total crash rate on that segment below the statewide rate it used for comparison. That rate is also below the critical rate the Authority lists for the segment. Its report estimates average daily traffic on the segment at 38,900 vehicles, a figure it calculated from 2022 detection data.
On US 64 between Laura Duncan Road and US 1, the Town of Apex lists the planned conversion of the Lake Pine Drive and Laura Duncan Road intersections into interchanges. NCDOT's own project page says planning and development are underway to improve traffic flow along US 64. The two towns' pages list different construction years for the main highway work, 2030 on Cary's and 2031 on Apex's.
NC 55 is a different case. NCDOT's environmental document for the Technology Drive and East Williams Street intersection states that "the purpose of the project is to alleviate anticipated future peak hour congestion within the study area."
The official sources cited on this page do not rank Apex roads by danger, and this page does not rank them either.
How can you check one Apex intersection?
NCDOT's Safety Data Maps include a Total Crash Frequency by Intersection map. NCDOT calls it planning level data and says its Traffic Safety Unit can provide detailed numbers if needed.
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Crashes map plots those crashes back to 2007. The Statewide Crash Dashboard covers the latest five years. NCDOT also maps its safety projects, which it defines as improvements meant to address a specific crash pattern at an intersection or section of road, and it typically updates that map quarterly.
A count on a map does not tell anyone what happened in one crash. Fault in a single crash turns on the evidence from that crash.
The Apex crash attorney page covers the police department and the nearest emergency departments. The Apex crash report guide explains the records request.
