The 2024 North Carolina Traffic Crash Facts report counts 1,030 crashes in Garner, with 5 people killed and 394 injured. NCDOT project records name US 401, the US 70 and NC 50 junction at Timber Drive and the Toll NC 540 interchange at I-40 among Garner's major corridors.
Those figures come from the city crash data table in the 2024 edition, the newest one NCDMV posts for download. NCDMV's Crash Facts page says the 2025 report is available by email request. The 2024 edition was compiled from crash data the state received before May 8, 2025.
What does the 2024 state table show for Garner?
The city table splits each town's row into four groups. Every column NCDOT published for Garner is below.
| Garner, 2024 | Crashes | Fatalities | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|
| All crashes | 1,030 | 5 | 394 |
| Alcohol | 33 | 3 | 22 |
| Pedestrian | 9 | 0 | 9 |
| Bicycle | 0 | 0 | 0 |
The alcohol group accounts for 3 of the 5 deaths in Garner's row. The pedestrian group shows 9 crashes and 9 injuries with no deaths. The city table carries only 2024 figures and gives no 2023 row for Garner, so this page does not compare the town against its prior year.
For scale, the same report counts 284,546 reportable crashes statewide in 2024, with 1,732 people killed and 113,602 injured. The commissioner's message says reportable crashes rose 0.1 percent from 2023 while fatalities rose 2.7 percent.
Which crashes does the state count?
The Crash Facts report is built on reportable crashes. G.S. 20-4.01(33b) defines a reportable crash as one that results in death or injury, or in total property damage of $1,000 or more. The report notes that the property damage basis rose from $500 to $1,000 effective January 1, 1996.
A crash with no injury and less than $1,000 in damage falls outside that definition.
The reports behind the count come from the agency that worked each crash. G.S. 20-166.1 has drivers notify the town police for a crash inside a city or town and the State Highway Patrol or the sheriff for a crash outside one. Troopers also patrol the state's highways under G.S. 143B-1716, so a trooper can work a crash on a highway inside Garner too.
How does NCDOT's three-year ranking describe Garner?
NCDOT publishes a second city report that counts differently. Its 2025 ranking is based on all reported crashes from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025.
| Garner, 2023 to 2025 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Total crashes | 5,486 |
| Alcohol-related share | 2.86% |
| Fatal crashes | 7 |
| Non-fatal injury crashes | 912 |
| Ranking, 2022 / 2023 / 2024 / 2025 | 23 / 23 / 30 / 30 |
NCDOT says the ranking is based on several factors including reported crashes, crash severity and crash rates based on population. A three-year total of all reported crashes is a different measure from one year of reportable crashes, and the two Garner figures are not comparable.
The Wake County page carries the same three-year figures for the county's other larger towns.
Which Garner corridors do official sources name?
- US 401, Fayetteville Road. NCDOT is converting more than a mile from south of Old Stage Road to south of Mechanical Boulevard into a six-lane, median-divided road. NCDOT says removing side-street left turns reduces "the risks of accidents and traffic delays." The contract went to Conti Civil LLC for nearly $26 million, and sidewalks and high-visibility crosswalks built under a cost-sharing agreement with the Town of Garner are meant to "enhance pedestrian safety."
- US 70 and NC 50 at Timber Drive and Hammond Road. NCDOT's project U-5744 would upgrade that at-grade intersection in Garner.
- Toll NC 540 at I-40 and I-42. NCDOT places the end of the Triangle Expressway extension that opened in September 2024 at the I-40 and I-42 interchange in Garner, with the next phase running east toward Knightdale and its opening anticipated in 2028. NCDOT reported in July 2026 that Phase 2 work would close a section of East Garner Road between Auburn Knightdale Road and Rock Quarry Road for about 45 days.
None of these sources ranks a Garner road by danger, and this page does not either.
What do town crash numbers say about one claim?
Nothing about its value. A town total describes traffic in Garner and says nothing about who was at fault in a given crash or what the injuries cost.
