How many crashes did NCDOT record in Fuquay-Varina in 2024?
The figures below are the full Fuquay-Varina row from the city crash data table in the 2024 report, the newest edition NCDMV posts for download. NCDMV's Crash Facts page says a 2025 report can be requested by email. NCDOT and NCDMV compiled the 2024 edition from crash data received before May 8, 2025.
| Fuquay-Varina, 2024 | Crashes | Fatalities | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|
| All crashes | 1,024 | 3 | 449 |
| Alcohol | 39 | 1 | 24 |
| Pedestrian | 5 | 0 | 5 |
| Bicycle | 2 | 0 | 2 |
One of the town's three 2024 deaths falls in the alcohol group. The pedestrian columns show 5 crashes and 5 injuries, and the bicycle columns show 2 crashes and 2 injuries, with no deaths in either group.
The table does not carry a 2023 row for the town, so no year-over-year comparison appears here.
Statewide, the 2024 report lists 1,622 fatal crashes and 281 pedestrians killed. It counts 11,376 alcohol-related crashes across North Carolina that year, with 361 deaths.
The state budget office lists Fuquay-Varina in both Wake and Harnett. Its July 2025 estimate puts the town at 46,493 residents, all of them in the Wake portion. The Crash Facts table reports the town as a single row.
What counts as a crash in these figures?
The report counts reportable crashes. Under G.S. 20-4.01(33b) a crash is reportable when it causes death or injury or total property damage of $1,000 or more. The report dates the $1,000 basis to January 1, 1996, when it replaced a $500 threshold.
Damage below that amount with no one hurt does not meet the definition.
Which officer files the report depends on location. Under G.S. 20-166.1 the Fuquay-Varina Police Department is the agency for a crash inside the town, and the Highway Patrol or the sheriff of the county takes a crash outside it, including on the Harnett side.
What does NCDOT's three-year count show?
A separate NCDOT ranking of cities with 10,000 or more people counts all reported crashes over three years. The 2025 edition covers January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025.
| Fuquay-Varina, 2023 to 2025 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Total crashes | 4,506 |
| Alcohol-related share | 2.42% |
| Fatal crashes | 6 |
| Non-fatal injury crashes | 738 |
| Ranking, 2022 / 2023 / 2024 / 2025 | 62 / 60 / 58 / 60 |
NCDOT describes the ranking as based on reported crashes, crash severity and crash rates based on population, among other factors. It measures something different from the single-year Crash Facts row, and the two totals do not line up. The Wake County page lists the same ranking figures for the county's other towns above 10,000 people.
Which Fuquay-Varina corridors do official sources name?
The Town of Fuquay-Varina names US 401, NC 55 and NC 42 as the three state and federal highways that intersect in town. NCDOT's project U-5751 targets the point where they meet.
- US 401, NC 55 and NC 42. NCDOT plans improvements to that intersection and an extension of NC 55 to Judd Parkway east of Stewart Street. NCDOT says the purpose is to "relieve existing and future traffic congestion," and it notes that "Fuquay-Varina is experiencing rapid commercial, residential and mixed-use growth." NCDOT lists the project as funded for $176.5 million.
- NC 55 at NC 42. The town's project page lists this intersection as the second one the work would improve.
- Toll NC 540. NCDOT names Fuquay-Varina among the towns the Complete 540 project connects. The town's 2023 planning document described the Triangle Expressway extension as under construction, and NCDOT reports it opened to traffic on Sept. 25, 2024.
In its 2023 request for a transportation plan update, the town said the plan was envisioned to include crash data among its statements of current conditions. None of the sources here ranks a Fuquay-Varina road as the most dangerous, and this page makes no such ranking.
What do these numbers mean for someone hurt in Fuquay-Varina?
Very little about a single case. It's very difficult to predict what any jury will award an injured party. Many factors come into play when trying a case to a jury.
The statistics describe traffic across a whole town over a year or three. The guide to the Fuquay-Varina crash report covers the one document that describes your crash, and the Fuquay-Varina attorney page explains how I represent people there from Graham.
